The quality and nature of the parenting a child receives will profoundly affect his future development. But few homes provide the right type of environment for a growing child. Numerous studies have shown that children with various types of psychiatric and behavioral problems come from homes or schools that are disadvantaged in some way.
Therefore, this study is planned to study certain family factors in association with behavioral problems in an adopted urban slum area of Government Medical College.
The present study shows that the family structure is changing more in favor of the nuclear arrangement. This may probably be because most families move from rural areas to urban areas for work or education. Therefore, the elderly people in the family stay in their homes in the villages. All these factors contribute to the majority of nuclear families in slums. Possibly, other vulnerability factors present in these children in this study may mask the effect of family type.
