According to Hambidge (1955), “Fiat panis” (Let there be bread) was selected as the FAO motto by the first Director-General, Sir John Boyd Orr. Various designs were used for the emblem after 1946, but the general pattern has remained unchanged, and some of the earlier versions were still in use in 1980/81.
