Let :

  • Present Age of father = x years
  • Present age of son = y years

Given :

  • Sum of present age of father & son = 60 years
  • 6 years ago , age of father = 5 times age of son

To find:

Age of son after 6 years

Solution :

Case 1)

Sum of present age = 60

x + y = 60 .... equation 1

Case 2)

Age of father , 6 year ago = (x-6)

Age of son, 6 year ago = (y-6)

Now , according to question-

age of father = 5 times age of son

(x-6) = 5(y-6)

x - 6 = 5y - 30

x = 5y - 30 + 6

x = 5y - 24 ..... equation 2

On putting value of x from equation 2 into equation 1, we get;

(5y-24) + y = 60

6y = 60+24

6y = 84

y = 84 ÷ 6

y = 14

Now we need to find age of son after 6 years from now ,

that is , y + 6

Age of son after 6 years from now = 14 + 6

Age of son after 6 years from now = 20 years

ANSWER : 20 years
