----------------------------------------

Here is the solution:

----------------------------------------

Define x:

Let the son's age be x

Father = 4x

Sum of Father's and Son's age is 53:

4x + x = 53

5x = 53

x = 10.6

Find their age:

Son = x = 10.6 years old

Father = 4x = 4(10.6) = 42.4 years old

Answer: The father is 42.4 years old.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------EDITED QUESTION:

Four years ago, my father's age was 4 times that of my age. At present the sum of my fathers age and that of mine is 53. What is my father's present age?

Define their age 4 years ago,

Son = x

Father = 4x

Define their age now:

Son = x + 4

Father = 4x + 4

The sum of their age is 53:

x + 4  + 4x + 4 = 53

5x + 8 = 53

5x = 45

x = 9

Find their age now:

Son = x + 4 = 9 + 4 = 13

Father = 4x + 4 = 4(9) + 4 = 40

Answer: The son is 13 and the father is 40 years old.

subhetsha84: dear its not the correct answer
TooFree: What is the answer? Let me check through what could be wrong if you can give me the answer.
subhetsha84: father's age is 40 years amd my age is 13 years
subhetsha84: its the answer but I wanna know whats the process
TooFree: But it is mentioned that the father is 4 times the son's age. If the son is 13, the father has to be 13 x 4 = 52, it can't be 40. You may want to check through the words, could you have missed out some information not type in?
subhetsha84: yeah sorry.... its 4 years ago my father's age was 4 times that of my age
subhetsha84: so sorry
TooFree: Added on the your edited question to the 2nd part of my answer. I hope you will find it useful :)
