Given :

Total distance drive by Fatima on one-way = 300 km

The average speed on going = 40 km/h

The average speed on returning = 60 km/h

To Find :

The average speed for the entire speed

Solution :

Let The average speed for the entire speed = S km/h

Time  = \dfrac{Distance}{speed}

Time taken to cover 300 km on going = t_1  = \dfrac{300 km}{40 km/h}

Or,                                                             t_1  = 7.5  hours

And

Time taken to cover 300 km returning = t_2  = \dfrac{300 km}{60 km/h}

Or,                                                             t_2  = 5  hours

So,, Total time taken =  t_1  +  t_2

                                  = 7.5  h +  5 h

                                   = 12 . 5 hours

Total Distance cover = ongoing distance + returning distance

i.e                            D = 300 km + 300 km

                              D = 600 km

Now, Average speed = \dfrac{Total distance}{Total time}

i.e     Average speed =  \dfrac{D}{t_1+t_2}

                                   = \dfrac{600 km}{12.5 h}

     Average speed     = 48 km/h

Hence, The average speed for the entire trip is 48 km/h  . Answer
