Fe dose not burn on heating but iron fillings burn vigorously why?

dear your answer is the mass of small particles is such that entire particles can heated to ignition temperature. iron rod will not burn as it is relatively very less surface area per unit but iron fillings with more surface area per unit mass can burn in Iron and get covered to iron oxide
