It is a known fact that confidence is desperately needed by all to do anything. Without confidence nobody would be able to succeed. Fear is another aspect that can keep a person down. With reference to the chapter, 'First Flight', we see that the young seagull is afraid to fly and hadn't been able to muster up the courage to do so. It was only after his mother gave him a metaphorical push in the form of food that he was able to overcome his fear of flying. This proves that without the confidence he needed to dive after the food, he could have been stuck on the cliff for ages. Without his mother's support and with the fear in his heart he wouldn't have been able to take a leap of faith and discover his own ability to fly.
