It is composed of three main plateaus :Malwa, Deccan and Chotanagpur plateaus. 2.The ranges of central highlands are Aravalli range,Vindhya range and Rajmahal hills etc.

The feature of Central Island are:-
* It is the part of Peninsular plateau lying to the north of the Peninsular plateau lying to the north of Narmada river covering major area of Malwa plateau.
* The Vindhyan range is bound by central Highland on the south and Aravallis on the Northwest.
* They are wider in the West but narrower in the East.
* The eastward extension of this plateau are known as Bundelkhand.
