  • Ghagra also called as Karnali river is a perennial transboundary river originating in Tibetan plateau from Lake Mansarovar cutting through the Himalayas in Nepal. It has a length of 507 kilometers and is the largest tributary of Ganges.
  • It has a tributary Choti Gandak which is a grounded meandering river originating near Dhesopool, Maharajganj district of UP. Mainly controlled by rainfall and most of its basin is used for irrigation and damming purposes.
  • The Kosi river drains from the northern slopes of Himalayas in Tibet and southern slopes in Nepal. Having a length of 729 kilometers, Kosi has an alluvial fan which is largest in the world.
  • Also being named for the "sorrow of Bihar" with annual flooding for 21,000 km square. Sagarmatha national park and Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve are also located on this river.

In the direction of the Indian slope of that part of the Himalaya of which we now have to treat is properly divided according to its river basins. Commencing from the east, Nepal embraces the Karnali (or Ghagra), Gandak and Kosi river systems, all affluent of the Ganges. In the wets of Nepal, the Karnali system consists of the rivers Kali, Sweti-Ganga, Karnali, Bhei, Sarju, and Rapti.  

Their sources lie between the Nanda-deri (25, 693 feet) and the Dawala-giri Peak (27, 693 feet). Central Nepal embraces the river system of the "Sapt Gandaki" or seven Gandak rivers called the Narayani, Seti-Gandaki, Marsyanghi, Buria Gandak, Tirsuli Gandak and two other of less importance. Their sources lie between the peaks of Dawala-Giri (27, 000 feet) and Dayabung (23, 762 feet). Eastern Nepal is drained by the Kosi river system, consisting, of the Gandak of seven main streams.
