In hilly regions, people built diversion channels known as guls or kuls of the western Himalayas for agriculture. It is a traditional irrigation system in Hmachal Pardesh, where the water is released when required.
ROLE OF KULS AND GULS OF THE WESTERN HIMALAYAS:
(i) In Western Himalayas people build diversion channels like ‘guls’ or ‘kuls’.
(ii) In arid and semi-arid regions, agricultural fields were converted into rain-fed storage structures.
(iii) These allowed the water to stand and moisten the soil like the ‘Khadins’ in Jaisalmer and ‘Johads’ in other parts of Rajasthan.

Answer:

Kuls are a traditional irrigation system in Hmachal Pradesh- surface channels diverting water from natural flowing streams( Khuds).

A typical community kuhl services six to thirty farmers, irrigating an area of about 20 hectares.

In hills and mountainous regions, specially in western Himalayas, people build diversion channels called guls and kuls for irrigational purposes .

Spiti's unique contribution to farming is kul irrigation, which utilises kuls (diversion channels) to carry water from glacier to village.
