The northern plains includes the valleys of the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. It lies south of the Himalayas and north of the peninsular mountains like Aravalli. The plains are low lying (average of 200 metres above sea level) and is covered in alluvial soil brought down by the rivers that rise in the Himalayas.
