Answer:

Peninsular rivers are seasonal as they are rain-fed. The rivers are characterized by broad and shallow valleys. They flow over hard rock bed. The velocity of water in the rivers and the load carrying capacity of the streams is low due to low gradient.

Explanation:

Generally the rivers found south of the Satpuda-Mahadev-Maikal-Hazaribaug range are considered as the peninsular rivers. The major peninsular rivers are the Godavari, Tapi,Mahanadi, Krishna and Kaveri.

Here are some characteristic features of the rivers:-

1) They rise either in Western Ghats or the Satpuda-Mahadev-Maikal-Hazaribaug range.

2) Most of them flow towards the east or south-east,and empty into the Bay of Bengal.

3) Some of them flow towards the west, and meet the Arabian Sea.Most of these are short in length ( 30–60 km.).e.g.those from Konkan & Malabar.Tapi, which rises in the Satpuda,is the longest (725 km.)west flowing river of peninsular India.

4) East flowing rivers are longer, the length ranging from few hundred kilometers to more than 1400 km.(Godavari).

5) All the peninsular rivers are non-perennial.They are monsoon-fed,& are in floods only during the rainy season.

6) Most large east-flowing rivers form delta's at the mouth. But the delta's are not as extensive as the ones formed by the Ganga & Brahmaputra.

7) West flowing rivers do not form any delta.
