RYOTWARI SYSTEM (1820) This system was intro­duced in Malabar, Coimbatore, Madras and,Madurai. Under this system, the ownership and occupancy rights of land were vested in the ryots or tillers of the soil. They were required to pay the revenue directly to the Company. Where the land revenue was imposed indirectly -- through agreements made with Zamindars -- the system of assessment was known as zamindari. They were free to sell or transfer their lands.The rate of revenue was too high and the method of collection inflexible.

BUT THE MAIN FEATURES ARE:

It was the brainchild of Thomas Munro

It was meant to reduce intermediaries

Cultivating peasants were gradually impoverished by the system

It was introduced in parts of Madras and Bengal Presidency

Here are some features of Ryotwari System

1. All the land were claimed by Government and allotted directly to the cultivation on the basis of the amount of tax they could pay.

2. Farmers gained authority over their piece of land and they were free to use it in whatever way they wanted. It might be personal use, rent, sell ,mortgage and lease.

3. The farmer could be expelled from the possession of land if they were unable to pay tax.

4. The government has the authority to increase their revenue whenever they wanted.

5. The amount of tax was revised in every thirty years.
