Harappan Cities in Gujarat
Among the several Harappan cities excavated in Gujarat are Lothal and Dholavira.
- Lothal was situated at the head of the gulf of Khambhat. The region around Lothal was rich in semi-precious stones, an important item of trade. Lothal has also a flourishing bead-making industry, which made beads Terracotta, stone , shell , etc.
- Lothal has the remains of a large tanklike brick structure. This might have been a dockyard from which the maritime trade was carried on. Not far from this structure, the remains of a storehouse have been found also.
- One of the largest Harappan cities excavated in India is Dholavira in Kadhir Iceland in the Rann of Kachchh. The city has three parts - a citadel , a middle town and a lower town. The citadel and the Middletown are enclosed within high was provided with gateways. Stone has been used in the construction of some of the buildings. the lower town is not enclosed within a wall.
