Transitional epithelium is the layer of the epithelial tissue which consists of the cells of the deepest basal layers.

The transitional epithelium is also known as "Urothelium".

Features :-

  • The transitional epithelium generally consists of 4-6 layers.

  • The cells of the transitional epithelium are either columns or cuboidal.

  • The cells at the middle layer of the transitional epithelium are Polyhedral (Pear shaped) in nature.

  • The cells at the upper surface of the transitional epithelium are Globular (Umbrella shaped) in nature.

  • Basement membrane is absent in transitional epithelium.

  • Cells of the innermost layer of the transitional epithelium are held by the underlinked connective tissues.

  • Cells of the transitional epithelium are flat and are stretchable in nature.

  • Ureter
  • Urinary bladder
  • Urethra
  • Renal pelvis
