Civil Disobedience Movement

❉ The Civil Disobedience Movement led by M K Gandhi, in the year 1930 was an important milestone in the history of Indian Nationalism.

❉ It began with gandhiji's famous salt march of about 240 miles from sabarmati ashram in ahmedabad to the coastal town of dandi in gujarat.

❉ This movement aimed at peacefully defying laws without resorting to violence.

❉ First successful mass movement.

❉ People from all sections participated – role of students; people, young and old, joined.

❉ Role of women – for the first time women in large numbers left the comfort of their homes and joined the movement.

❉ For the first time the movement was launched with the goal of Purna Swaraj or complete independence.

❉ The people could successfully defy British laws.

❉ Participation of Dalits and Participation of Muslims was the limit of civil disobedience movement.

❉ There were large-scale boycotts of schools, colleges and offices.

❉ Foreign goods were burnt in bonfires.

❉ People stopped paying taxes.

❉ People faced the batons and bullets of the police with supreme courage.

❉ No one retaliated or said anything to the police.

❉ The movement was finally called off in 1934.

The Civil Disobedience Movement was significant in the following ways:

✵ People were expected not only to refuse cooperation with the British (as they had done in 1921-22), but also to break colonial laws.

✵ Thousands in different parts of the country broke the salt law, manufactured salt and demonstrated in front of government salt factories.

✵ As the movement spread, foreign cloth was boycotted, and liquor shops were picketed.

✵ Peasants refused to pay revenue and chaukidari taxes, village officials resigned.

✵ In many places forest people violated forest laws – going into Reserved Forests to collect wood and graze cattle.

✵ It was a movement that unified the whole nation in one way or the other.
