Felling of trees with gay abandon in the name of development is fast destroying the green cover of our cities. While development is necessary in the modern world, doing so by felling trees indiscriminately causes climate change and spoils the beauty of the cities. The most unfortunate thing is whenever trees are cut, a commensurate re-planting does not take place in our country. Take the case of the garden city of India, Bengaluru, whose beauty has been affected by destroying the green cover over large swathes of land taken up for the construction of real estate and the city's metro railway. It is said, a city's lungs are its green cover; and when that is destroyed, it is just like wrenching out this vital organ from the human body. Similarly, care should be taken in the construction of dams or other infrastructure projects; afforestation schemes should be taken up in lieu of the deforestation that takes place in setting up these pillars of progress.
