it is because for fertilization it is necessary for a ovum to be in the ampullary-isthmic region(about in between fallopian tube) and in the mid menstrual cycle ovum is present there.fertilisation can only occur if the ovum & sperm are transported simultaneously to the ampullary-isthmic junction.
