It is indeed a custom to give gifts on festive occasions. The main purpose of gifting is to convey good wishes and share happiness. Therefore, simply receiving beautiful gifts is not enough. The joy one gets on receiving a gift is a lot different than the joy of giving. Giving reflects one’s gratitude to God, for blessing the individual with friends, family or success. Though giving requires time, effort and resources (mainly money), the satisfaction that one gets from giving is unmatchable. It is a sublime feeling that is hard to describe. In fact, that is the premise on which the entire concept of charity is built.

During festivals or special family days (like the birth anniversary of parents or grandparents), people often give away things to the needy. It is a way of paying respect to those who are not with us, while also respecting those who are around, but are underprivileged.

Both receiving and giving gifts adds to the beauty of the festivities. It spreads good cheer and helps people find the time to meet their near and dear ones. Though festivities may be a little hectic, they definitely rejuvenate the soul.
