This area has had a huge rich-poor gap since ages. Population control came much later.

Some of the factors which leads to overpopulation are yet to be eradicated from these regions and remain typical to this circle. Some of these factors, straight from my 10th grade Biology textbook are as follows:

Prevalence of religious customs and superstitions/ fear of modern population control measures: Due to existence of orthodoxy among the majority population of these regions, use of several population control measures is shrouded in rumour-induced fears. For example, vasectomy is feared by males as it is believed that it would make them 'less of a man' (which results in extremely hilarious Government-sponsored advertisements to convince them otherwise). It is important to understand that the average Chines or India citizen living in rural East Asia is extremely different from the ones most people meet or hear about in the west and even in urban Asia.

Lack of sex education: Due to lack of a proper understanding of the functioning of sexual organs and unawareness about the disadvantages of overpopulation, several pregnancies occur which would otherwise have been voluntarily avoided.

Poverty and illiteracy: It is a common belief that children will serve as a helping hand for the family and the general population fails to realize that costs of upbringing of children in life-sustaining conditions is greater than the profit they can 'earn for the family'. This is the reason people often violently resist the idea of not having children as they are considered nonrefundable 'gifts from God'.

Desire for at least one male child: The male child is viewed as one who could continue the family name after the death of the parents whereas a daughter is regarded as an unnecessary expense because of the dowry and high marriage costs (funded by parents) associated with them in these countries. Moreover, due to towards limiting the size of families (and the 'one child law' now in China), female infanticide and sex determination crimes have increased in these countries.

Lack of recreation: This is the all time favourite answer to all questions (sometimes totally out of context)- due to lack of electricity and entertainment families, sexual intercourse is viewed as the most common form of recreation among poor families, much like in Europe before the industrial revolution.

Some other points too unorganized to warrant bullet points (only separate paragraphs)

Another great starting point would be some of the answers mentioned in Why is Asia so highly populated? I would recommend reading Dave Cheng's answer to this question for some great reasoning.

It has also been mentioned that the Black Death caused a huge decrease in the European population (30-60%) in Ashton Lee's answer but Kai Pan's comment refutes that claim stating that the Bubonic Plague itself originated in or near China and killed around 1-1.25 million people in the 15th century when the world population itself was around 190 (McEvedy & Jones, 1978) - 206 (Biraben, 1980) million, and spread along the Silk Route.

Another notion mentioned in He Shang's and Benjamin Ross' answers that Asia's population is so huge because its land area is proportionally larger is untrue because it is NOT proportionally larger:

#1: the image attached in the above attachment.

#2: Land Area by Continent as Percentage of Total Land Area of Earth

You will notice that Asia is about 4 times larger than Europe by land area but has almost 6 times its population. When talking about the world population, thus difference is huge. Clearly the situation is more complicated than you make it to be.
