The planets orbit the Sun and the Moon orbits the Earth because of centripetal force. There are two forces acting on the planets and the Moon to keep them in orbit around the Sun - they are 'inertia' and 'gravity'. In our frame of reference, Earth is moving horizontally or sideways at 108,000 km per hour; at the same time, gravity is pulling the Earth towards the Sun. If the Sun's gravity was absent, the Earth would fly off at a tangent into space; and if the horizontal motion at a certain speed was not there, the Earth will get pulled in to the Sun by gravity.

The simplest, easy to understand everyday example is: a ball on a string. The string provides the centripetal force pulling the ball in towards the person; same as the gravity pulling Earth towards the Sun; as long as the swinging continues, the ball goes round; if the speed reduces, the ball will fall down, and if the string is cut, the ball will fly off at a tangent.

If you are travelling in a car, and when it turns to the left, your body experiences inertia, since you were in motion along with the car at the beginning of the turn, you tend to continue moving in a straight line - because it is the car that is turning left, and not you. But since your body is still continuing to move straight, the car's door meets the right side of your body, you have the sensation of being pushed outward against the door, but in fact what has happened is that the door has moved inward due to centripetal force. In fact, without a sufficient centripetal force, an object simply cannot turn.Common Examples are

1.A ball , revolving in horizontal circle attached to a rope.

Think what happens if rope suddenly breaks.

2.A vehicle turning on the road.

3.Sattelites revolving around earth.

4.Planet bounded to Sun.

5.Electron motion.

6.Dryer in washing machine.

aryan7559: Thanks you so much for this answer. Actually I know it's definition but not sure about examples. Once again thank you so much.

1- when object moves in a circular path then the force acts upon it is called centripetal force.

example - 1-movement of Earth around the sun .

2- movement of wheels especially in circular pendulum .
