Few important qualities of F.N. Souza " The Landscape In Red??
Answers
Answer: he current work from 1960 is a view from the roof of Souza's London studio. The painting is done in the artist's vibrant, bold brushstrokes, characteristic of his landscapes from this period. Unlike the more structured compositions of the 1950s, Souza's landscapes of the early 1960s become progressively more abstract and gestural, and are infused with Souza's energy, visible in both composition and technique. While several of Souza's landscapes from this time were inspired by the buildings and architecture around his studio in North London, the landscapes become less literal and are more concerned with his own impressions and emotions.
According to the consignor and close friend of the artist, Souza painted this work on a night of 'great joy and happiness.' He was extremely attached to the work, but didn't sell it for many years until he was satisfied it was going into the right hands. As he states, 'I became friends with the old man when I was still in my 20's (he was in his 70's), and started buying a work here and a work there without any thought of "collecting", at a time when very few people ever showed up at his place to buy, and - while I recognized the sheer quality of the work - it was generally assumed that Indian art prices were unlikely to rise very much, ever. I became attached to the man as much as his work. And so my idea was to buy from what he himself considered talismanic, most important. Souza was touched by this, and so wound up selling me the works from his kitchen, his living room, the works on Encounter magazine pages, etc
