Ganga River is a very big and sacred river of India and the second largest river in the Indian subcontinent. It originates from Gangotri, which is a large glacier in the Himalayan region and flows through the hills, plains, terrains etc. Ganga is also a trans-boundary river which flows in India as well as Bangladesh with the name of Padma.

There are several legends which are associated with Ganga River which makes it as the holy and one of the most revered rivers in India.

As per the Hindu mythology, Ganga River was named on Goddess Ganga who resides on the heads of Lord Shiv.

गंगा भारत की नदी है । यह हिमालय से निकलती है और बंगाल की घाटी में विसर्जित होती है । यह निरंतर प्रवाहमयी नदी है । यह पापियों का उद्‌धार करने वाली नदी है । भारतीय धर्मग्रंथों में इसे पवित्र नदी माना गया है और इसे माता का दर्जा दिया गया है । गंगा केवल नदी ही नहीं, एक संस्कृति है । गंगा नदी के तट पर अनेक पवित्र तीर्थों का निवास है ।

गंगा को भागीरथी भी कहा जाता है । गंगा का यह नाम राजा भगीरथ के नाम पर पड़ा । कहा जाता है कि राजा भगीरथ के साठ हजार पुत्र थे । शापवश उनके सभी पुत्र भस्म हो गए थे । तब राजा ने कठोर तपस्या की । इसके फलस्वरूप गंगा शिवजी की जटा से निकलकर देवभूमि भारत पर अवतरित हुई ।

इससे भगीरथ के साठ हजार पुत्रों का उद्‌धार हुआ ।गंगा हिमालय में स्थित गंगोत्री नामक स्थान से निकलती है । हिमालय की बर्फ पिघलकर इसमें आती रहती है । अत: इस नदी में पूरे वर्ष जल रहता है ।
