Answer:
Chandragupta I was the first king of the Gupta dynasty. He adopted the title of Maharajadhiraja or king of kings. He married the licchavi princess Kumaradevi to enhance his prestige. He was succeeded by Samudragupta.
Samudragupta is considered to be the greatest Gupta king. The plans of his campaign are inscribed on the Ashokan Pillar at Prayaga. The Prayaga Prashati gives us information about Samudragupta's conquests and accession. It was written by Harisena, the court poet of Samudragupta. It also describes the king as a lover of poetry. Samudragupta was succeeded by Chandragupta II.
Chandragupta II took the title of Vikramaditya and extended the limits of the empire by marriage alliances and conquests. By the end of his reign, his empire extended to western, northwestern and eastern India. Chandragupta II is also known for the patronage of men of letters. Kalidasa, the Sanskrit poet, was a member of his court.
Chandragupta II was succeeded by Kumaragupta who in turn was succeeded by Skandgupta.
Skandgupta was successful in controlling the attacks of Huns, a barbaric nomadic tribe of Central Asia. However, the later Gupta rulers were weak, so gradually the provinces under the Guptas became independent and some went under the control of the Huns. The Gupta Empire disintegrated by the mid sixth century CE.
