He practiced ahimsa, non violence and tried to teach this to most of the Indians during the time when the British came to India.He led the civil disobedience movement. He also led the Khilafat movement with the brothers Muhammed Ali and Shaukat Ali. The famous salt march was led by him when Indians were forbidden to make salt. From the Sabarmati ashram he went to Dandi, Gujarat and broke the salt law by boiling sea water. He promoted to boycott the mill clothes and said to use cotton clothes.
