An interruption to the continuity of a river system, generally caused by a physical barrier such as a sluice, weir or barrage, but can also be as a result of bed controls such as culverts. In-channle sutrctures present a barrier to downstream movement of sediment and water and an obstacle for fish passage and migration of other aquatic fauna. The reduction in sediment load downstream of the structure can result in sediment starvation which can result in increased erosion during higher events of flow releases.
