yes, it was started from sabarmati ashram to dandi by Gandhi ji. He was accompanied by 46 supporters . It was started because British government wanted to take the Monopoly of making salt.and passed a law , banning the manufacture of salt.Thus, salt is the basic requirement of every person.that is why it was started.
