Answer: Fiber is an essential nutrient of a healthy diet. It is not digested by the human body. It is important because of the following reasons-

  • Fibers create weight in the food, due to which stool and harmful components pass easily through the digestive tract.  Thus, it keeps the colon ( part of large intestine) clean and healthy.
  • It helps in reducing weight. This is because it creates a feeling of fullness in the human body. Due to this, a person tends to eat less.
  • Soluble fibers ( dissolve in water easily) like oats, apples, and citrus fruits reduce cholesterol and glucose levels in the body.
  • Fibers also decrease the risk of heart disease and type two diabetes.
