Given:

3 kg of melons and 4 kg of mangoes = 470

5kg of melons and 6 kg of mangoes = 730

To Find:

Price of 1 kg of melons and price of 1 kg of mangoes

Solution

Define x and y

Let the number of kg of melons be x

Let the number of kg of mangoes be y

Form the equation:

3x + 4y = 470 --------------- [ 1 ]

5x + 6y = 730 --------------- [ 2 ]

[ 1 ] x 5:

15x + 20y = 2350 --------------- [ 3 ]

[2 ] x 3:

15x + 18y = 2190 --------------- [ 4 ]

[ 3 ] - [ 4 ]:

2y = 160

y = 80

Substitute y = 80 into  [ 1 ]:

3x + 4(80) = 470

3x + 320 = 470

3x = 150

x = 50

Find the price of melons and mangoes bought:

Melons = x

Melons = 50

Mangoes = y

Mangoes= 80

Answer: 1 kg of melons cost 50 and 1 kg of mangoes cost 80
