Figure shows a balloon filled with air and a light straw (passing through a string) attached to the balloon with a tape. When the thread closing the mouth of the balloon is opened, air comes out of tge balloon to the left side. To conserve the linear momentum of the system (balloon and straw).

To conserve the momentum of the system (balloon and straw), the straw and balloon will move to the right side. Thus, the correct option is (b).

Explanation:

  • When a balloon filled with air is attached to a straw with the help of tape as shown in the figure, initially the momentum of the system is zero.
  • As the thread closing the balloon is opened, the air comes out of the balloon with speed in the backward direction, i.e. to the left side.
  • In order to conserve momentum, the balloon moves in the forward direction, i.e. to the right side along with the straw.
  • This happens because when air comes out of the balloon with speed, it exerts a force on the outer air in the left direction.
  • According to Newton's third law of motion, a reaction force is exerted by the outer air on the balloon in the opposite direction of the action force that makes it move in the right direction.
