Conjunctions are linking words. We use them to link ideas. The ideas may be similar or contrasting.
There are two kinds - coordinating conjunctions and subordinating ones.
Coordinating conjunctions connect two independent clauses. They are mainly 7 in number. You can easily remember them using the mnemonic FANBOYS.
- For - I went to sleep; for, I was sleepy.
- And - Rishabh did the work and Jannat did, too.
- Nor - I did not know her; nor did she know me.
- But - I went outside but it was raining.
- Or - Have the cake or eat it.
- Yet - I was not the best student; yet, most teachers liked me.
- So - I went first to the interview; so, I had a good impression on the interviewers.
The subordinating conjunctions are used in complex sentences as they make independent clauses dependent. For example:
As, Since, Because, While, Whereas and many more .. to be used in complex sentences, for instānce: “I did my homework as my brother played”; here 'as my brother played' can't stand alone, so it is a subordinate clause, made dependent by the subordinating conjunction 'as'.
