Answer:

The Ryotwari System was introduced in 1820 by Sir Thomas Munro, the then governor of Madras the system was practised in the Madras and Bombay region of the country.

Under this system the peasants, farmers or cultivators had right over the land, the tax was directly collected by the government from the peasants; the peasant was assessed for the lands that they cultivated.

This system was in operation for nearly 5 years and had many features of the revenue system of the Mughals. It was instituted in some parts of British India, one of the three main systems used to collect revenues from the cultivators of agricultural land.

It was directly imposed on the ryots through agreements, the rate was 50% in dry lands and 60% in the wetland. In this case the rates were high and unlike the permanent system they could be increased.

As per the ryotwari system if the ryots did not pay the tax they could be evicted from their land by the government. As the contract was directly with the cultivators there were no middle men like in the Zamindari system.

So, as per the above given explanation the correct solution is option (A), i.e. Madras and Bombay Presidency.

Note: The Ryot in the Ryotwari system refers to the cultivators of the land.

The Ryotwari system or the taxation system used to put a burden on the peasants and get them trapped in the circle of middlemen and loans as they needed money to pay off their taxes.
