2. is (poet is singular, though action referred to both)
3. many a student is wrong..
Also I think you misspelt 'this' as 'his' in question
either it can be most of the (or) many.

Most of the students try hard to pass this exam .
Many students try hard to pass this exam.

In both cases, noun is plural so singular verb is used.
