4]Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General, introduced several administrative reforms, notably in the sphere of justice. From 1772 a new system of justice was established. Each district was to have two courts – a criminal court (faujdari adalat ) and a civil court (diwani adalat).

5]The Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in Calcutta (Kolkata), was founded in 1774 by the Regulating Act of 1773. It replaced the Mayor's Court of Calcutta and was British India's highest court from 1774 until 1862, when the High Court of Calcutta was established by the Indian High Courts Act 1861.

6]Queen Elizabeth I

7]Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who reached India by sea on May 17, 1498. His fleet reached Kappakadavu near Calicut in the current Indian state of Kerala.
