Digestion is both intracellular as well as extracellular in Branchiostoma.

• Branchiostoma is a sedentary animal it can swim actively in water.

• Both extra and intracellular digestion is a unique feature in Branchiostoma.

• Digestive enzymes are secreted in the midgut diverticulum, mid and hindgut. Those enzymes are amylase, lipase, and protease.

• The epithelial cells lining the digestive tract of Branchiostoma can express many immune genes.
