There are three degrees of comparison.

➝ Positive Degree.

➝ Competative Degree.

➝ Superlative Degree.

❈ What does degree means here?

→ Basically 'degree' means Raise the level of something.

Positive Degree :

  • In positive degree we doesn't compare any object, person, or group etc. In Positive Degree we just describe one object, group or person. We also don't add suffix in this.

For example :-

  • Sania is a pretty girl.

→ Here, Sania isn't compared to any other person. She is just described. The word 'pretty' is describing her without any suffix in that word.

Comparative Degree :

  • When two peoples, two persons, two group are compared then it is said as 'comparative degree'. When we change a positive degree into comparative degree then the adjectives are adjoined with suffix like e, er or more.

For example :-

  • Sania is prettier than Mania.

→ Here, Sania is compared with mania that she is more beautiful than mania. so it's a comparative degree.

Here, in the word 'pretty' , 'er' is added because it's a comparative degree.

Superlative Degree :

  • When we compare three or more nouns then it is called as 'Superlative degree.' In Superlative Degree three or more Object, persons, or group is compared. We make a positive degree into superlative degree by adding 'er', 'est' or most.

For example :-

  • Sania is prettiest in her class.

Here, with the word 'pretty' we adjoined 'est' that she is prettiest in her class. Hence, it is said as 'Superlative Degree'.
