The discovery of a granary at Harappa lends support to this. The discovery of large number of spindles proves the use of cotton for weaving social cloths. Wool was also used. The garments might have been sewn. History of clothing in the Indian subcontinent can be traced to the Indus Valley Civilization or earlier. Indians have mainly worn clothing made up of locally grown cotton. India was one of the first places where cotton was cultivated and used even as early as 2500 BCE during the Harappan era.

In the Harappan Civilization, the people wore clothes made from leather, sheep skin, flax, cotton, and silk. Dyeing facilities indicate that cotton cloth was probably dyed a range of colors even though there is only one surviving fragment of cloth, dyed with a red madder.
