Preposition :

Preposition  is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to govern its relation to some preceding noun or pronoun.

Example:-

1. The pen is in the inkpot.

2. We depend on you.

3. The ship is sailing to the shore

4. Cut the rope with a knife.

5. The traveller sat under a tree.

Each word in bold type is used before and noun or pronoun. It governs the relation of this noun or pronoun with the preceding noun or pronoun.

1. The word- in -shows the relation of inkpot with pen.

2. The word - on- shows the relation of you with we.

3. The word - to - shows the relation of shore with ship.

4. The word - with - shows the relation of knife with rope.

5. The word-under-shows the relation of tree with traveller.

Kinds of Preposition

Prepositions are of three types :

1. Simple Prepositions

2. Compound Prepositions

3. Participial Prepositions.

Simple Prepositions

Simple prepositions are simple short words that have not been derived from any other words ; as :

at, by, down, for, from, in, of, near, on, out, over, since, through, till, to, under, up, with.

Compound Prepositions

Compound prepositions are compound words formed by putting up prefixes before nouns and adjectives etc. ; as :

about, above,  across,  among,  around,  before, behind, below, beneath,  between, beyond, inside, into, outside, until, within,  without, beside, onto , upto.

Participial Prepositions

Participial prepositions are present participles in form but they are used as prepositions ; as :

considering, concerning,  pending,  permitting, owing, during, regarding notwithstanding .
