About the Essay
The essay is about the initial phase of Satyajit Ray's
career in the film world.
Here Ray unfolds the problems faced by him in his
initial ventures and what he learnt from them.
Written in a direct style and narrated in the first
person, the prose offers a closer understanding of Ray’s
philosophy about film making.
The essay gives a detailed account of the process of
film making in India and its challenges.
Contd.
Ray confesses that when he began his career as a film
maker he did not know how adventurous it would be.
He also confesses that he had no intentions of making
a film meant only for the niche audience.
He always wanted to make films that would be
different from conventional Bengali films.
Although Ray had enough theoretical knowledge of
film making he realized at the outset that film making
is a difficult job practically.
He recalls a scene in Pather Panchali in which a boy
had to look for his sister in a field.
Cont.
He realized that a scene with a single actor is much more
difficult to shoot than a scene with an army attacking the
other side.
The shooting of this scene taught Ray that capturing the
simplest human emotion requires a lot of hard work.
Ray talks of the New Wave cinema and says that it lacks
polish intentionally as polishing a film requires time and
also greater expenditure.
He mentions Antonioni, a European film maker whose
stories are told without any frills.
His stories are simple and the characters move the
audience with their humanness.
Contd.
After 10 years of film making, Ray feels that one should
not be fixated with any rules in film making.
During the course of his career he enjoyed working
with professional actors as well as amateurs.
Ray knows that with the right camera angle and the
right technicians even a scene shot indoors can be
shown as an on location shot.
