A rational number is any number that can be written as the ratio of two integer numbers. So if we write 1/3 as 3/12 and write 3/4 as 9/12 we can pick any from 4 to 8 and place it over 12 and get a rational number. Of course the denominator does not have to be 12. It just makes for an easy example.
