Solution: Using mean method:

(Whenever we have two rational numbers such that one is greater than the other, the number obtained by dividing the sum of given numbers by 2 i.e. the mean of given numbers, is a rational number between the given numbers.)

To insert a rational number between  -1  and  $\frac{1}{2}$, we need to find the mean of  -1 and $\frac{1}{2}$

i.e., $(-1 + \frac{1}{2})$ ÷ 2 = $(\frac{-2 \ + \ 1}{2})$ ÷ 2 = $\frac{-1}{2} *\frac{1}{2} = \frac{-1}{4}$

We find that  -1 < $\frac{-1}{4} < \frac{1}{2}$

Hence, $\frac{-1}{4}$ is a rational number between $-1 \ and \ \frac{1}{2}$.
