We know that an rational number between any rational numbers a and b is a+b/2

so,

A rational number lying between -1 and 1/2 is

  \frac{ - 1 +  \frac{1}{2} }{2}  \\ \\  =    \frac{ \frac{ - 2 + 1}{2} }{2}    \\ \\  =   \frac{ \frac{ - 1}{2} }{2} \\ \\ =  \frac{ - 1}{2}  \div   \frac{2}{1}  \\ \\  = \frac{ - 1}{2}    \times  \frac{1}{2}  \\ \\ =  \frac{ - 1}{4}  \\ so \: the \: rational \: number \: between \:  - 1 \: and \:  \frac{1}{2} is \:   \frac{ - 1}{4}

Hope this is useful....
