Find a² + b², if a - b =17 and ab = 6

given a-b=17

a = 17 +b

a²+b²

a²+b²+ab

using identity,

(a-b)²=a²+b²-2ab

squaring a-b,

(a-b)²=a²+b²-2ab=17²=289

putting ab=6,

a²+b²-2(6)=289

hence,

a²+b²=289-12

a²+b²=277
