Answer:
The Chipko Movement
The word " chipko " means " to stick " to hug ". It was a movement started around 260 years ago in Rajasthan by a large group of people from 84 villages,
led by a lady called Amrita Devi. These people laid down their lives by saving trees from cutting down in orders of a king of jodhpur, who wanted to build a palace for his family. After that incident, theking passed an order to not cut any tree in all Bishnoi villages.
This incident aspired several others. Sunderlal Bahuguna an eco - activist spent his whole life educating villagers about deforestation. He made an appeal to Mrs Indira Gandhi to ban cutting of trees.
Gauri devi was part of greater Chipko Movement.
Another such leader was Chandi Prasad who helped to develop small scale Industries using the forest resources.
He prevented the setting up of goods company in Alakananda Valley in Uttar Pradesh.
