The Indian peacock (sci name-Pavo cristatus) was declared as the national bird of India in 1963 because of its rich religious heritage and involvement in Indian traditions. The criteria for a bird to be declared a national bird was that it should be recognized by the common man, should not be mistaken with national birds of other nationalities, have a part in the history and traditions of the country as said before and be well distributed in the country.
