The acceleration is more or less the same at any height from the Earth(so long as it's in the atmosphere). Thus, it was pretty much always be -9.8 m/s²

If it's really far from the Earth, use equation -G * m1 * m2 / h where G = 6.673×10-11 N m2 kg-2, m1 = mass of Earth, m2 is mass of object
