25 = (5 - a)² + (3+1)²    .......Taking square roots on both the sides

25 = 25 - 10a + a² + 4²

25-25 =  a² - 10a + 16

a² - 10a + 16 = 0

a² - 8a -2a + 16 = 0

a (a-8) -2 (a-8) = 0

(a-8) = 0 or (a-2) = 0

a = 8 or a = 2
