Given:-

 {x}^{2}  - 2x - 3

on factorizing we get

 {x}^{2}  - 3x  + x - 3 \\  so \: we \: get \\ x(x - 3) + 1(x - 3) \\

so \: the \: next \: step \: is \:

(x+1) (x-3)

x+1 =0, x-3 =0

So x= -1 and x= 3

so -1 and 3 are zeros of polynomial

lets take

 \alpha  =  - 1 \: and \:  \beta  \:  = 3

so,

 \alpha  -  \beta  =  - 1 - ( + 3) \\  =  - 1 - 3 \\  =  - 4
