Whatever I know about this incident is from my school textbooks which I had last opened 3 years back so some facts may be missing but here is the gist of it.

Champaran was a region in the, now, Bihar state which was one of the many examples of the exploitation of Indian people and their land and resources by the East India Company when they ruled over India. The farmers there were told (read: forced) not to grow food crops and instead grow cash crops (you can think for yourself what would have happened to people who did not follow their instructions) mainly the one which is used to produce indigo dye. Then they would buy the products of farming at really low prices from these farmers thus leaving them penniless in all but name, since they had produced cash crops instead of food crops they did not have their own produce for their daily survival as well as all of the money which they had received could either be used to buy food from other regions which would last for a short period of time or to buy seeds and other agricultural materials to produce these cash crops once again thus starving in the long term in any option they chose. They endured this at first but then they had to plead help from people outside the region and later Mahatma Gandhi answered their call(though after what amount of time is unclear to me ; maybe more detailed history has been recorded just not disclosed to us students so as to make the picture appear rosier than it was since it was already an appalling incident).

Most of the people were either dying of starvation (and schoolchildren were not informed if the farmers had actually committed suicide since that information is also very skewed in our state approved history books with suicide only approved when people become martyrs) or had huge tax/loan/other financial burdens and even the richest farmers could barely survive from one day to another.

Mahatma Gandhi came to Champaran by train in the Third Class ( this fact is propounded by the movie based on his life and not mentioned in any schoolbooks provided in our state so unsure about its truth and how to verify this) even though prominent Indians were allowed in the Second Class and in rare case the First Class. At Champaran he had all sorts of injustice thrown towards him which the villagers were suffering from. He inspired them to protest non- violently and also protested along with them. After some time the protest was allegedly successful and the Officers of the East India Company lifted the tax burden levied and the loans, along with not forcing the farmers to grow the cash crops though I do not know till how long that lasted.

If you feel that you need more information you can check other sources on the internet since this was how we had been taught history: a seemingly large background, a short narration and almost no talk of it's aftermath.
