Answer:

In the given figure, The major portion on which the semicircle is drawn is in the shape of a rectangle. Hence, We should find the area of the rectangle and subtract the area of the semicircle from it to get the area of the shaded region.

Step 1 (Find the area of rectangle)

From the figure, The dimensions of the rectangle is as follows:

  • Length = 20 cm
  • Breadth = 14 cm

We know,

⇒      Area of rectangle = Length ×  Breadth

⇒      Area = 20 × 14

⇒      Area = 280 cm²                                  ...(1)

Step 2 (Find the area of semicircle)

From the figure,

  • Diameter, d = 14 cm

∴  Radius, r = 7 cm

Now,

⇒      Area of semi-circle = πr² / 2

⇒      Area = 22/7 × 7 × 7 / 2

⇒      Area = 11 × 7

⇒      Area =  77 cm²                         ...(2)

Now, As described in the beginning of the question:

⇒  Area of Shaded region = Area of Rectangle - Area of semicircle

⇒  Required Area = 280 - 77          [ from (1) & (2) ]

⇒  Required Area = 203 cm²

Hence, The area of the shaded region is 203 cm²
